About our zoo
Nanjing Hongshan Forest Zoo is located in the northern part of Nanjing. It is a beautiful home for over 3,000 rare and wild animals of more than 260 species from all over the world in the city. Among the lush greenery, about 30 exhibition areas are scattered naturally and harmoniously. Gondwanaland, Gaoligong Wilderness Habitat, Native Wildlife Conservation Area, Primate of Asia, Wolf Habitat, Bear Habitat, Tiger Habitat and other areas are all advanced animal exhibition areas with international concepts. Adopting an immersive multi-species mixed breeding model, animals are allowed to naturally display their innate nature in an environment that simulates their original habitats, fully showcasing their wild charm.
Hongshan Forest Zoo adheres to the action guideline of "Everything for the Animals". Through professional technical support and the staff's enthusiasm for the animals, it fully showcases the vigorous, lively and relaxed positive state of wild animals. It undertakes the functions of wildlife rescue and rehabilitation at both the provincial and municipal levels, rescuing lost animal neighbors in the city.
In the field of wildlife conservation and ecological synergy, through establishing a deep cooperation network with multiple national nature reserves, over ten universities and research institutions in China, we focus on the protection of native rare species. We conduct population dynamic monitoring for native species such as the leopard cat, the Chinese water deer, and the black kite, providing data support for the restoration of their wild habitats. The "Native Species Conservation Area" has become a "transition training ground" for native species before their release into the wild, accumulating valuable experience for improving their survival rate in the wild.
In pursuing a new natural economy and sustainable development, Red Mountain Forest Zoo is committed to a "zero carbon, zero waste" vision, creating a replicable ecological management model for the park. This is achieved through the installation of photovoltaic panels on building roofs to supply clean energy, the establishment of a circular system integrating animal waste, organic composting, and plant maintenance, and the development of new natural economy offerings—such as nature experience programs and eco-themed cultural and creative products. These initiatives link public consumption with ecological conservation, fostering a virtuous cycle of environmental protection, education, and economic growth.
As a National Exemplary Science Popularization Education Base and a brand-new ecological calling card of Jiangsu Province, Hongshan Forest Zoo takes conservation education as its core mission, relies on scientific research as its technical support, sets comprehensive conservation as its highest goal, and is striving to practice international cutting-edge development concepts. Hongshan forest zoo fulfills the important value of "public education" while advancing toward establishing a world-class educational urban zoo.
